1760 – Aviemore House, Monaghan, Co. Monaghan

Aviemore House is the most imposing residence in Monaghan both from its grand facade to its positioning on Hill Street. The building is placed on the end of the climb of Mill Street and is visible from the Diamond – at one time this site was proposed for the Cathedral. The heavily rusticated facade however is a sham – added around 1840 to a late Georgian house with the last 6 feet standing clear of the roof line. A very good doorway is reached by a flight of nine stone steps.
