Architect: O’Neill & Byrne

0001

Second placed entry to design the South City Markets on Great Georges Street. This design features a large glass covered market hall with entrances to each of the bounding streets. The Castle Market building features another covered market hall although much smaller. The original chosen design was badly damaged by a serious fire in 1892, the adaption was handled by W.H. Byrne, and he was also responsible for removing the central tower & spire and the corner spires from the Georges Street facade, giving us the building we see today. Illustration published in The Building News, October 18 1878.
