Bodley & Garner’s design for Liverpool Cathedral, which was submitted in competition with William Emerson’s & James Brookes and which placed second. The site was different from the site of the later new Cathedral, being close to St. George’s Hall in central Liverpool. Bodley was the first pupil of Sir George Gilbert Scott and retained his links with the Scott family (Bodley’s sister had married a son of Sir Giles) and guided the young Giles Gilbert Scott, grandson of Sir Giles, in preliminary designs for the Liverpool Cathedral that was later built.
