The building is Gehry’s first to be completed in New York. The design is the product of a collaboration between Gehry and IAC’s chairman, Barry Diller. The motif of a sailing boat was selected by Diller from a range of possibilities proposed by the architect. Diller also stipulated that he wanted the building to be made entirely of glass – an unusual material for Gehry. The glass is fritted with white to create both privacy and exterior colour. The unusual form has resulted in some awkward corners and glazing patterns, but it also a curiously elegant building that looks equally good in morning sunlight or in the evening, internally lit.
