1840 – Lock Keeper’s Cottage, Templetate Lock, Smithborough, Co. Monaghan

Fine stone cottage overlooking a former lock on the now closed Ulster Canal. The canal which linked Lough Erne to Lough Neagh was never a financial success and was only open for a few years before the railways arrived and put paid to any chances it may have had.

Many stretches are now filled in, as in the are in front of this cottage at the Templetate Lock (Lock 22). It is identical in design to others like Gortnacarron (Lock 25) and Glear (Lock 24). Only the stone walls of the lock can be seen, jutting out of the field.
