A 262 bed secure facility facing the city’s Law Courts (the two structures are linked by an underground tunnel which allows for the secure movement of inmates), this building resembles a large corporate law firm offices rather than a place of detention.

Making use of bold geometric shapes joined in abrupt transitions, Gaboury creates a dramatic presentation of sharp angles and strong definitions. The triangular form of the building reflects the most efficient configuration for visual surveillance from a central control station. Security is based on the principle of “secure envelopes”, which maximize building security while facilitating the free movement of inmates within the building. Consequently, electronic monitoring is utilized only during off-hours and in non-residential areas. The interior of the building is designed to provide a humane environment for the inmates by maximizing natural light for all spaces.
