Selected after an architectural competition, the embassy is arranged around a central courtyard, a cloister-like space shaping the organisation of the plan. All the main rooms of the embassy; the inner hall, the conference room and the staff lunch room face onto the courtyard. The elements that form the courtyard vary in height from one to three storeys, with the highest block facing Merrion Road. This block houses the principal elements of the embassy, and gives the building its public street facade. The design of the exterior of the embassy uses both metal and masonry in a combination of traditional materials and modern construction techniques. Roofs are faced in slate andlead; walls are clad in Wicklow granite,Portland stone and oak.
