1948 – Post Office, St. Andrew’s Street, Dublin

A relatively large building, this Post Office was built to replace an earlier one on nearby Church Lane which links Andrew and Suffolk Streets to College Green. The original building was demolished, and the site now incorporated into the former Ulster Bank building. Maskell, the architect, moved to Ireland at the start of World War II, was also responsible for the restoration of the gardens at Kilmainham Hospital. The Post Office was opened in 1952 by Erskine Childers, Minister for Posts and Telegraphs. Finished in granite, with a strong horizontal emphasis, the building is an exercise in a ripped-classical style. The otherwise plain and quite severe stone exterior is decorated by roundels depicting icons connected with communications. A notable element of the building interior that remains is the coffered ceiling in a geometric pattern that spans the parcels office and post office area.
