Visiting Professorship for Leading Architectural Historian

logo_universityulsterLeading architectural historian James Stevens Curl has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster. Professor Curl takes up his new position within the School of Architecture and Design at Ulster’s Belfast campus.

Educated at the Oxford School of Architecture and at University College London, Professor Curl worked as an architect specializing in historic buildings and conservation before becoming a full-time academic in 1978. He has twice been Visiting Fellow at Peterhouse, University of Cambridge.

Professor Curl is the author of many acclaimed and influential books including Victorian Architecture (2007); The Oxford Dictionary of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (2006); The Egyptian Revival (2005); Classical Architecture (2003); and, The Honourable The Irish Society and The Plantation of Ulster (2000). His latest book is Spas, Wells, & Pleasure Gardens of London (2010).

Welcoming the appointment Professor Ian Montgomery, Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and the Built Environment, said: “With an international reputation for scholarship and investigation into little-known fields of research, Professor Curl’s knowledge and experience will be invaluable to our students.”

Professor Steven Spier, Head of the School of Architecture and Design, added: “Having such an eminent and prolific historian as a Visiting Professor will hugely enrich the students’ learning experience and our research at Ulster.”
