Published from The Roadstone book of House Designs, produced in 1980. Billed as “A guide to building your own home with 25 new house designs by Reg Chandler, Des Doyle, Arthur Gibney, Ray MacDonnell, and Allan O’Regan”. Described as “The exigencies of a site frequently leave a house surrounded by flat fields, fences and main roads with no focal view. This interesting house compensates by creating a garden court or outdoor room as the focus around which the different elements of the house pin-wheel. Areas of glass and glazed walls open on to this outdoor-indoor room and provide an opportunity in the Irish climate for interior-exterior living. A courtyard like this – sheltered, sunny and accessible to different areas of the house – can provide a whole interior landscape on an otherwise unexciting site. The design suggests a pergola roofing and in fact it could be totally glassed over to provide a dramatic and light-filled central area for the house. Each of the areas of living has a corresponding space in this intricate design. The bedroom wing has three generous bedrooms and a loft area above affording space for a master bedroom with bathroom attached and a small balcony. The dining room communicates by hatch with a large kitchen and attached utility room. All of the rooms have generous pitched roofs which provide a challenging clustered roofline. The construction is of white masonry blocks contrasted with panels of stained softwood timber sheeting and capped by a roof in Trutone slates.”
