Dublin-based architects Heneghan Peng have been shortlisted as one of seven firms competing to design a major new extension for Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The winning team will be asked to create new underground galleries on the site of Daniel Libeskind’s aborted Spiral development. The gallery will house the V&A’s programme of temporary exhibitions with a courtyard above which will be built within the facades of the V&A’s grade I listed building, and a new entrance created on Exhibition Road through the Aston Webb screen.

The V&A chose the seven from more than 100 expressions of interest. The full list of shorlisted firms: Heneghan Peng Architects; Jamie Fobert Architects; Jun Aoki & Associates; Michael Maltzan Architecture; Snøhetta and Gareth Hoskins; Tony Fretton Architects.

A five-strong jury, which includes V&A director Mark Jones as well as architect David Adjaye, has been visiting existing projects by all the shortlisted teams as part of the judging process. All were chosen to work up designs last November and will find out at the end of the month who has landed the prized deal. The competition has been organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants. The shortlisted entries are on display at the V&A’s Sackler Centre from now until April 3.
