UAHS to launch online Traditional Building Skills Directory

logo-uahsSince 1993, the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society (UAHS) in partnership with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency has produced a comprehensive online ‘Built Heritage at Risk Northern Ireland Register’ (BHARNI). The primary aims of the BHARNI project are to identify vulnerable structures which are at risk, raise awareness and act as a catalyst for their reuse. Over 200 buildings and monuments have already been saved and in 2013 the partnership celebrated 20 years of success highlighting some of the best practice case studies.

Associated with the register are a range of publications to heighten public awareness and provide information and advice to owners and potential restorer purchasers- one such publication being the ‘Directory of Traditional Building Skills’. A key element to any successful restoration project is to ensure that appropriate conservation works are carried out using the correct methods and most appropriate materials by qualified and experienced consultants. Planned and regular maintenance is essential for any historic building and professional input for more extensive conservation works is important.
