The main entrance to the castle for vehicular traffic, the gate has a pedestrian walkway above for security. The gateway to the left leads to the Castle Steps which is a pedestrian walkway to Castle Street. This was designed by Francis Johnston in 1807 to improve security at Dublin Castle after Emmet’s 1803 rebellion.
