genius, pure genius. As long as it doesn’t go the same way as the giant Afghan Buddhas it’ll be ok. Any ideas for Dublin? Arthur Guinness, Bono, Bertie?

It is hard to believe this is real. Are the clasps actually headlights?

That’s absolutely insane and hopefully saner heads will prevail and kick that idea into touch.

Remember when the Spire was being decided a guy kept writing to the paper demanding that a statue of “Christ the King” be erected instead – and they kept printing him as well!

At the risk of diverging from the consensus, some years back I was passing through Le Puy en Velay where they have a 70 foot high pink Madonna overlooking the city – similar idea of being able to go up inside it etc.

      🙂

Got to say it made a pleasant enough – if a tad gimmicky – tourist attraction. One aspect of it that may also merit considering – given the North’s recent history – is that weaponry from the Crimean war was melted down in and used in the construction; there could be the potential there for some positive symbolism, perhaps?

This thing will probably be built in the name of cultural parity…..spend the £15 mill on a statue of George Best or better still give it to Shells as a hand across the border exercise !!

Now thats what I like – positive thinking…Theres an excellent idea for parity between Belfast and Derry – build a Big Bestie to match on the Lagan! :p

Please, oh please let them build this. It will be the single greatest monument ever erected.
