Despite the economic gloom there seems to be some ongoing activity in Cork City Centre. I’ll throw up a few shots and start new threads.

First up the Half Moon St development that also takes in Mathews. This site as I recall kicked off as the first option explored by The Examiner for their new home. Cut to two or three proposals later and OCP stepping in…

View from Academy St not so bad

Particularly don’t like the obliteration of Shandon from the view

Overall, the final product is streets ahead of what was initially proposed – but that isn’t saying very much 😉

i agree the view from academy street is impressive, but i’m not so sure about the view from the river. the curve reflecting the crawford gallery adds interest, but the river side is just one bland blank slab, and the facade of the old house isn’t accommodated very successfully.

does anyone know how the house will be intergrated into the floorplan. is it a stand alone unit/letting or will it be accessible from the rest of the development?

I presume the treatment of the protected house will be similar to the other OCP development down the quayside (apologies for no Lavitts Qy shots – too lazy!!!)

The treatment of the house on the quay is appalling…ditto their treatment of a similar house further up the quay. I’d go so far as to suggest that they should both have been knocked if this is the sort of garish ‘outfit’ they will both have to wear into the future.

I pointed out when this was on plans that it would obliterate the last view of Shandon from Patrick Street. Despite all of the City Council’s huffing and puffing regarding views of landmark buildings, we get this rubbish. They would have been better off building a few metres higher and blocking out the fish totally – whats left is merely rubbing our faces in it!

Passed the half moon development recently. Anybody know whats going in adjacent to the old house? They seem to be fitting it out for some sort of retail use. A firm of architects in the house at the moment.

I guess fears that all the commercial space coming on stream in the Half Moon and Faulkner’s Lave developments may have been somewhat unfounded. Boots The Chemist have announced they are taking a huge amount of OCP’s Half Moon development. Four floors being taken, with two being actively used as retail space. Main entrance will be at the former Matthew Centre entrance near Paul Street. It will be the 2nd biggest Boots in the Country.
