Anyone see the new Royal Hibernian Academy aka Gallagher Gallery on Ely place. It has been given a makeover and it’s a 100% improvement. This was always a great gallery being quite generous and open for exhibition space. It now has a very contemporary feel, and looks rather cool too. Inside, it’s kinda a bit like the new Millenium Wing of the National Gallery. It has that air and look about it. There is an exhibition on at the moment with a great selection of paintings and sculpture, so pop along and pay a visit! It’s well worth a look!

Looks very smart – a distinct improvement. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the brick exterior as built wasn’t the intended design, but I could be mistaken. Always enjoyed the interior spaces for exhibitions.
Photograph of finished looks far superior to cgi concept on the site

I had a mooch around the exhibition the other day and, as someone who can clearly remember the old gallery it is a different world. The consolidation of the ground floor spaces works great and the new atrium space is excellent – some serious structural gymnastics in that stair – if you’re there notice that it isn’t actually resting on the floor – it’s totally cantilevered off the wall. The removal of the old stair up into the main gallery has meant that the main gallery is now a quite enormous self contained box. The new cafe to Ely place is a great addition – amazingly people were queuing to get in. On a good day in the old gallery you’d still be one of only a handful there. Long may it continue – it’s one of the best exhibition spaces in the country
Another HJLyons job I believe – with this, the new building on Warrington Place and the emerging Courts they’re becoming a design practice worthy of real note
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience – typical RHA annual exhibition though – beautifully presented but a real mixed bag of talent.

Yes, a most impressive makeover and a once under used facility is now looking very much nicer. It badly needs a couple of street signs pointing to it to steer the plain people in, – God knows there are plenty of poles in the vicinity that could play host, from the Brennan period of post hole erection in Dublin.
The cafe is rather undersized, the bookshop has a fair stock, but it may not be doing a lot of business.
