I think this is a ludicrous idea. Definitely a no no. There is way too much fucking around with historic buildings.

BTW, Norris cushy job as a senator as well as the rest in the talking shop is a waste of taxpayers money, especially in these credit crunch times and a Taoiseach already robbing the good people.

I was in the Ulster Bank on College Green recently, and wow, what a grand entrance, with the huge arch that leads into……………. a cavernous warren of an office space.
Another act of wanton vandalism where this once fine old building was gutted in the 60’s or 70’s and just the facade retained.

My Jasus, what a bunch of morons!

Gas how big business in swinging 1960’s Ireland thought that it would add some high prestige to their business profile when they moved to addresses on the likes of Fitzwillian Sq, Merrion Square etc…
However and ironically they then proceeded to tear the architectural fabric and balls outta these historical areas. What a bog minded bunch.

We should rebuild the houses, it isn’t about reproducing whats lost but restoring what has been damaged, the streetscape.

It would be silly to paint an old masters painting, John Currin excepted, but if someone tore a Vermeer, it would be repaired.

    …and this one too!

After WWII the Poles recreated many medieval squares that were bombed to bits by the Nazi’s. Today, they are seamless and folk don’t bat an eyelid.

A few years ago they “restored” the Sistine Chapel, which involved not only cleaning the ceiling but also repainting many areas where the paint had flaked off. They still call it Michelangelo’s work even though some of it isn’t. It seems to me the arguments here (less obviously absurd because it’s part of the wearisome architectural orthodoxy) are tantamount to suggesting that Willem de Kooning should have been brought in to fill in the blanks in the ceiling in his own style.

    very good analogy!

I agree with rebuilding the 16 houses. It’s a simple case of repairing the vandalism and damage that has been done. And this treatment should be applied to what’s left of all the historical areas throughout the city…. ie the Quays etc… and Thomas and James Street as dealt with on another thread.

A simple matter of approach to historical areas is of applying the basics of uniformity, symmetry, sensitivity, respect, maintenance, etc….(infill that is sensitive whether it’s contemporary or a recreation)…. and then we’d have a city that’s visually better with all those looses ends fixed up and no jarring eyesores.

Plenty of employment too as there is a plethora of fixing to be done.

In the long run it makes sense.

(BTW….Anyone see the area of the quays where the Brazen Head pub is…….very bad case of the butchers and botchers at work. And then there’s the awful Gardiner Street, etc….)

See that the botchers and the butchers are digging up parts of O’Connell Street. Making a right mess too as they arse around meddling with underground pipes.

They are also in action too on Dame Street, botching and butchering right on the new plaza beside City Hall and that incongruous odd looking new building.

Took a stroll down to have a look at the bridge yesterday, and it looked great; really elegant looking, mounted on it’s pivot. Both the bridge and the NCC are great additions that give a bit of visual variety that was badly needed. The docks is kinda coming together. It will make a nice walk from the Grand Canal Basin area with the new Liebeskind theatre down onto the Liffey quays with the new bridge and the NCC. The bridge will look cool at night too when lit up.

Why is it that the bovine sculpture has no horns?

Is the sculptor trying to say something?

Or is it because that horns might be a danger to the public, should a drunken Joe Soap or a kid become impaled on it?

There is a fine statue of a Bull on Wall Street, horns and all.

But it’s great that it has finally arrived. Must ramble down to have a look at it.

Folk should’nt get too sentimental for the old market or horse fair. The thing is, that there is an architectural backdrop there now, and it’s just a matter of filling it with people. Getting a bit of human life into the place is the priority now like down the docks.

I suppose folks living there in the new appartments are crippled with mortgages or rent and are only going from bed to work. I dunno how the Council and local business folk cant initiate something to attract folk out of their appartments/cells. The Ice Skating and Chinese New Year festival are the sort of thing to give the place a lift. How about live open air music, jigs and reels etc… in conjunction with the Cobblestone could be a weekly feature….bring back the market but make it like the one in Temple Bar, with an international flavour as well. Hang up flags and buntings. A Horse Fair too but get the Irish Equistrian crowd and the moneybags Horse Racing crowd and a few toffs involved to share their knowledge. Make it weekly or montly etc….Get the Gardai involved as well to keep an eye on the druggies, skangers and half wits. It seems to be a main feature of Irish society today, as there are hundreds of such unfortunate people, homeless teenagers and children abandoned by their parents throughout the city centre, and very prominent along from Wood Quay to Aston Quay.

Regarding the tree planting to soften the place, but I’d be on for that, but with the trees planted in containers so that they could be moved about or removed when required. A few flower containers as well to liven the grey concrete. Jaypers, it’s not too big a deal really.

Moore Street is the exact opposite, a bustling market street full of folk from around the world but with an awful architectural backdrop of dereliction and squalor.

Indeed, that 2nd smaller image of the stadium that Ofjames is on about is the original proposal which was modified to the sexier glass shell proposal as shown above in the superb renders. I hope the finished structure will look just like it.

Good research Darkman, really good photos and it’s great to see it in the making. Given the economic downturn etc…I thought this project might have been abandoned too. It will look superb down the docks beside the NCC. Help break up the awful visual monotony.

A harp on it’s side, an apt emblem. I wonder if ye’d you get a tune outta those chords, if ye struck them.
