The ESB may not have a choice in the matter

The ESB has been working for more than 18 months on a design competition for the redevelopment of its headquarters at Fitzwilliam Square in Dublin. However the city council may be making the decision for the company.jdivisionParticipant@hutton wrote:
The story as headlined is making news in a summer season when this is already long since known.
Very much so
jdivisionParticipantThey’ve been fairly emphatic they’re not interested. Google has E100m to spend on a HQ, it would prefer to get one built to spec because they think the Carroll building thye’re in is shit. If I was them I’d take the Liam Carroll one on the south docks where the basement’s already in but planning expired. That way they could start going up as quickly as they want
jdivisionParticipantMcNamara had bought in other buildings in and around the hotel to facilitate expansion IIRC
jdivisionParticipantJohn Corcoran seemed to be having a direct go at that shop in the weekend, can’t blame him
jdivisionParticipantIt’s hugely impressive inside.

One source said he believed that development levies paid towards the (linear) park had been ringfenced for that purpose but the authority’s view is different. “The board of the authority is currently reviewing options for the linear park which may include scaling back plans given our current financial situation. Income to the authority in the form of levies is not earmarked for specific project use but is allocated across all area and social regeneration projects,” a spokesman said last week.jdivisionParticipantCarvills on Camden Street?? It’s a guess but like the others I’m being bugged by it cos I know it.

I agree with tommyt, Smithfield Resi…the horse fair is a sham. Its a disgrace to allow it to continue because of some legal nicety. 1,000 years of history or not. If its necessary to continue a horsefair then it should be at a proper modern facility, just like a mart. And why on earth is it needed in the centre of a city!
On the other hand why should it be moved to down the road from where I live (as planned). It’s always been there, why move it? I agree on the welfare front but also believe that a centralised location should facilitate, rather than inhibit it.
jdivisionParticipantYes they say that, but there is still a suspicion it’s not. The original plan by Clinton for it wasn’t bad but O’Reilly’s document was a bit ridiculous and then Clinton changed his mind.
jdivisionParticipantBut there’s still a lot of suspicion that wasn’t the building of interest
jdivisionParticipantGiven one of the jury owns a building designed by one of the architects shortlisted afaik one would hope they will be ruled out. But to be honest I think we all know their version of blandness will likely win.
jdivisionParticipantAre most of them still owned by the Underwoods. There’s been one for sale there for years but they’re looking for silly money for what is essentially a wreck.
jdivisionParticipantThere’s a further information notice in on this in the Irish Times today. Seems a number of the buildings scheduled for demolition will be retained, or at least have their facades retained. Somebody more familiar with Limerick than I am will probably be able to say more on it.
jdivisionParticipantI thought there was going to be more external wood cladding on this.
jdivisionParticipantFrom the Tribune:
Advertising company JC Decaux has asked the council to include recognition of the “potential to generate revenue streams from existing facilities which could fund other public-realm enhancement programmes”. The company’s controversial deal with DCC to provide bikes and other facilities in return for advertising is cited as an example of this. “We feel there could be potential scope for further public-realm enhancement schemes which could be self-funded through utilitising existing DCC resources,” wrote Julie Mulleady, business development director at JC Decaux, which also wants the question posed of a potential expansion of the bikes for hire scheme which might be deemed or considered appropriate.Dublin City Business Association, however, said that once deals such as the one with JC Decaux are agreed, they are locked off and no longer commercially sensitive so therefore DCC should make them available for public inspection. “The unpopular contract agreed by city officials with advertising firm JC Decaux has done a great deal of damage to the good reputation of the local authority – but in particular, by virtue of the council withholding on releasing the contract after it had been agreed,” it said in its submission.
It also said the council should be clear when a CPO is being moved or threatened and that councillors should be made aware of this prior, and during the process. “Dublin City Council must avoid being brought into situations where the authority’s reputation can become tarnished by suggestions of unfair deals,” it wrote.
Finally, Dublin Port said it was a matter of great concern to them that “some council officials have advocated the closure of the port in favour of property development”.

Whether in common usage or not, it is part of Irish culture and Irish heritage and should be given the recognition it deserves.
It has equal treatment so what more do you want? Millions upon millions is wasted every day on translating documents which hardly anybody will read in Irish. Even in the Gaeltacht areas I’ve been to, most people speak English on a daily basis.
jdivisionParticipantBridge looks fantastic, went down yesterday to see it, very impressed
jdivisionParticipant‘The Timber Yard’ housing development on the Coombe Bypass.
