As an ensemble the two parts work well, and fountain element and figures a delight – but the statue is so very clunky and lacking in stature.
And his head looks like it’s been transplanted. He looks one of those diplo men, ya knows th ones, its awful? who made it
compared to this one, http://multitext.ucc.ie/d/Image_Statue_of_Thomas_Davis_in_Dublin_City_Hall_by_John_Hogan

Eddie Rocket’s next door is housed in a fine, sturdy Victorian that badly needs cleaning:
The acres of flat polished granite are such a cop out – the shopfront should come right up to the top of the corbles, where a limestone panel should then be inserted across the top, with lettering attached. What a fine property this could be once again.
After all that you have to agree that those two Mcdonalds aren’t that bad at all front and signage wise are they?
compare to something like a centra, the worst thing about the Burger King is the window is so big up there you can see all the **** eating their crap.

as a student of NCAD i can confirm that the students are all delighted at the recent decision to not move to Belfield.
this will hopefully mean thomas street campus redevelopment as soon as the board of education cough up the 80 million needed.
that should be soon:rolleyes:good news how many million did the gov waste on bribes for MIT/HUB DublIn? Is the Thomas expansion plan online somewhere?

somebody already pointed out
the plaque is filling in a hole left when the millennium clock (“the chime in the slime”) was abandoned.
So I’d blame them for hacking out a chunck of the bridge, not the hoaxer, there was no vandalism involved.
hmm I can’t find a picture of it anywhere
lostexpectationParticipantlook at the amount of green space around the Dolphins barn high density and todays high density?
Glad we not repeating, nah mulitplying old mistakes…. :rolleyes:lostexpectationParticipantIs there no plan for another large! natural history museum elsewhere in Dublin or Ireland in fact. Decentralise the museums!
lostexpectationParticipantSurely using the site to commemorate 1916 and turning it from the central post-office to museum is a complete paradox.

They had to buy the land that forms the curvy bit of H&M off the Council. Could be the council didn’t want to sell more (although I think that’s unlikely). The Dunnes stuff above is correct. They’re closing the one at the Moore Street end and that will be redeveloped into four or five double height retail units. The library is probably moving out too.
to me that H&M store and whatever it was before seemed like a difficult fudge, Isn’t that suppose to be (one of the) the main entrance to the ILAC, oh do i go through H&M open door or this non-descript patio door here… ?
lostexpectationParticipantthe thing I keep hearing about these ironbars being used to smash people and property, its those shiny bollards from oconnel street!

To sum up, I think that Ballymun “failed” in an Irish social sense because it was perhaps too modern for the Dev’s Holy Catholic Rural Ireland and it created a negative reaction to the Irish, who think people can only live in bungalows on an acre of land. I think if Ballymun was built today, it would have got a lot more TLC from Irish Government and society as a whole. A freind of mine who stills lives there once summed it up beautifully. “If we want to make the rest of Ireland respect and cherish Ballymun then paint the flats white and tatch the roof of the towers”.
Ireland was not ready for the Ballymun Flats when they were first built.
I know this is supposed to be an architecture forum so I dont know why Im posting with these people ^ but I have no idea what this rural rant of your is about, Ballymun like towers didn’t work in any Country at the time whether they had Gaelige football or not and would not work today if built, the un-monied put into them and then abandoned, today either.
lostexpectationParticipantwhy didn’t they show the bit where people get on or off, does the car do a vert or is there a big spiral staircase?

Have a look at http://www.McCulloughMulvin.com web site, where they have an idea for ‘Nine Squares’ on Dublins North inner city.
I haven’t looked too much into that side of the city as yet. Your observations are welcome though. That is one massive hole they built in Smithfielf though I think.
Wheres is that Nine Squares thing I can’t quite find it ? (grrr to pointless popup windows).
I didn’t realise the northside had 9 squares
