Friends of E-1027 has officially obtained not-for-profit status as a sponsored project of The New York Foundation for the Arts, allowing them to proceed with all plans for raising funds.

They have planned the first event to support the purchase of E-1027. As reported previously, the French Government has asked us to raise $150,000 to help them with the initial purchase of the house. The benefit event will be an elegant cocktail party on Monday, May 24th from 6-8 pm at Pucci International in New York. Pucci represents Ecart, the design firm which produces Eileen Gray’s designs (once headed by Andre Putman), and they will be donating their fabulous space for the event.

The highlight of the evening at Pucci will be the auctioning off of one of Gray’s Satellite Mirrors. A special honored guest will be the Mayor of Roquebrune – Cap Martin, Jean Louis Dedieu, a respected musician who will give a performance during the event. He will also speak about the project and about the government’s involvement with E-1027. Tickets for the event will cost approximately $150 (not yet determined). Of course, donations for any amount will be solicited and much appreciated. Checks will be made out to The New York Foundation of the Arts, and all contributions will be tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

I tend to agree with you – the journal ‘Irish Architect’ [which seems to have died] could best be described as fairly sychophantic but then again there is a very small circle of architects doing anything interesting and mainly in or around Dublin so I suppose you review one building harshly, they’ll all stick together 🙂

The important thing is with the death of the ‘Irish Architect’, the only publishing outlet on Irish architecture is Frank McDonald’s weekly article in The Irish Times. If I could persuade architects to free up more information for here, i would love to extend the OnSite Ireland section into a proper online journal with regular issues – but getting information can best be described as getting blood out of a stone and I have a day job which prevents me from spending all day chasing them for information. However if any architects reading these want to send me some stuff on their latest work opr even short written articles, I’ll publish them on this website.

I’m hoping to get permission soon to republish some of their images on this site with some of their accompanying text.

Architects have always seemed a bit luddite to me. At one stage I was involved in computer illustration and animation – specifically buildings and we just found that:

    a) most architects wouldnt be interested
    b) when they were, their drawings were being hand drawn which meant that we have to redraw everything in CAD prior to modelling which left it prohibitively expensive for all but the largest projects.

I tend to agree with you Owen. The glass obelisk was definitely the most interesting design but to my mind posed some interesting questions: wear; cleaning; its huge weight.

As far as I know, the tower is there to provide water pressure(though I am open to contradiction on that). I would agree thats its not as powerful a building as the Berkeley but taken in the context of this years awards I think it deserved better for the way it integrates the old dental hospital.

Great article about the attempts of an Irish Paris based architect to interest Irish bodies in saving E.1027 by Eileen Gray

There is more than just the centre – there are offices and hotels and apartments.

I’ve always referred to those type of building as ‘International Toylandism’ – they’re property developer’s ideas of architecture.
