The death has been announced of Professor Andy McMillan last Saturday in Inverness, Scotland, at the age of 85. Andy and his late Partner Isi Metzstein (died 2012), both of Gillespie Kid and Coia Architects, were well known to Architecture students in UCD during the period 1969-1974. Andy and Isi were part of what were known as “the flying circus” of UK architects who flew in during the regime of Ivor Smith, Director of Architecture UCD, after Professor Desmond Fitzgerald was sidelined. Andy was also involved in the assessment of the Developer’s Competition for the Custom House Docks in 1987 which was won by Benjamin Thompson Architects on behalf of a consortium which included British Land, Hardwicke and McInerneys.
