The church was built in 1884-7 by the architect Hugh Roumieu Gough. The exterior is in red and black brick.

In the early C20th the Horns Tavern had become a major social centre with a large assembly rooms to the rear and further back along Kennington road at least one brothel.
Bennett is celebrated for having provoked the decision that the doctrine of the Real Presence is a dogma not inconsistent with the creed of the Church of England.
