1875 – Design for Hastings Town Hall, Sussex

Architect: E.J.J Shrewsbury

0075

From The Architect, July 24, 1875: This design was submitted in the late competition by Mr. E.J.J Shrewsbury, of Maidenhead. It was one of the selected six, and is said to hare stood fourth in the final selection.

In this design the large hall (occupying about one-third of the cube of the entire building) is not placed on the principal side, it being considered especially desirable (in view of the unfortunate result of the former competition) to keep the cost well within the limits of the stipulated expenditure.

Ample room is provided for the grand staircase, vestibule, and crash landing. The council chamber and committee room occupy the front of the building, the borough court being placed at the back, immediately over the police cells. The whole of the offices required are arranged upon the ground floor. The building would be faced with the local blue stone, with Bath stone dressings.
