Angela Brady makes a bid for the RIBA president post

brady_angelaDublin-born Angela Brady, of London-based Brady Mallalieu Architects, is bidding to become president of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) – with a ringing endorsement from Lord (Richard) Rogers. “I had the pleasure of working with Angela when I was at the GLA and I believe that she has the skills to make an excellent President”

She also has the backing of other luminaries such as former RIBA president Sunand Prassad and Sir Terry Farrell, who believes that Brady’s “purposeful, energetic, communicative and happy and comfortable” persona makes her “a natural for the job”. Brady is well-used to the public stage, having starred in the Channel 4 television series The Home Show. “If elected, I will be the champion of all of our RIBA members. I will not be out “˜cutting ribbons of new supermarkets but out fighting our corner,” she says in her manifesto.

“I have campaigned all of my professional life;- on environment issues, saving loved buildings, increasing women and diversity in our profession, standing up for better design locally and nationally, and promoting sustainability to the public. I have set up international networks and organized exhibitions worldwide to promote our architects and our profession

In the past 20 years I have been involved in some of the best professional advisory panels in the UK which are architectural, political, educational and in design review

I am a director of a well known private practice who understands our professional needs and is willing to give up most of my time in the next 4 years for the cause of architects and architecture at a key time in our lives – this is not something chosen lightly or without much thought and sacrifice

I have been an ambassador for architects and architecture for many years spending at least 2 days a week on issues facing our profession and initiatives to celebrate it too. I have the TV experience and the media skills necessary for the RIBA Presidency, to cover many events including the 2012 Olympics promoting the best of UK architecture to a global audience I will do it with enthusiasm, energy and panache. I have the passion and drive to be heard by a wide audience ”

RIBA members have five weeks to make up their minds between her and two other candidates, Richard Parnaby and Roger Shrimplin.
