Competition: New Cancer Treatment Centre for Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust wish to build a new £90m (approx) Cancer Treatment Centre on its Guy’s Hospital site, close to London Bridge in central London. The Trust is committed to building a world class facility that offers an outstanding working environment and patient experience that will set new standards for cancer care.
The new Cancer Treatment Centre (CTC) will be the first building in a phased development that will ultimately deliver an Integrated Cancer Centre, combining first class clinical care with groundbreaking research. The initiative was conceived by Guy’s and St Thomas’ in collaboration with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and its shared university partner, King’s College London. The CTC will be a stand alone building, approx 19,000m2 and will be able to deliver tangible and measurable patient benefits from its first operational day.
The Trust wishes to ensure that the full design team is committed to both the design and delivery of the new CTC and the competition seeks expressions of interest from contractor/architect teams with the capacity and imagination to deliver the project. The successful consortia will need to strike a balance that considers cost, long term value and architecture, to generate an outstanding vision and then, to work with the client and other key stakeholders, to see it through to completion.
The competition jury panel will include architects Simon Allford and Spencer de Grey. Simon Allford said “Much recent research suggests that a building that lifts the spirits for those who use it will improve the rates of staff and patient attendance. The client’s aim is that this project will prove this point”.
The competition will follow a multi-stage process with up to six teams taking part in the design phase, each receiving an honorarium of £20,000 (plus VAT). In the first instance the competition seeks expressions of interest from consortia which must as a minimum include a contractor, architect, and engineers. During the course of the competition teams will be invited to meet and discuss their designs with stakeholders and end users of the building.
