Commonage Summer School – Ten day architecture programme
Commonage is a five-year active research project situated in Callan town, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland intended to expand the field of architecture and to provide a resource for future development to be measured in qualitative rather than quantitative terms. The 2011 programme will explore the possibilities and potentials of ‘collective building’ and will include a series of temporary built interventions, an exhibition, summer school and symposium.
The Commonage Summer School is a non-didactic program of collective building. Over the course of the ten day program Summer School participants will work directly with commissioned architects and artists as well as construction professionals to realise temporary built projects in the town of Callan. Participants will acquire practical construction skills while exploring architecture as an inherently social act.

On completion of the Commonage Summer School the temporary structures will remain in-situ for one month to coincide with audiences drawn to Callan for the Abhainn Ri Festival (23rd – 31st July), COMMONAGE (23rd July – 14th August), and the Kilkenny Arts Festival (5th – 14th August).
The close of the Summer School marks the opening of the Abhainn Ri Festival in Callan – a community festival of inclusion and participation which takes place July 23rd – 31st 2011. Summer School participants are encouraged to stay for as much of the festival as they wish.
Participants are required to travel to Callan, Co. Kilkenny for the course of the summer school and to take part in the school’s activities during the weekdays that the school is running.

Please provide a cover letter explaining why you are interested in/suitable for Commonage Callan’s Summer School. C.V.’s/portfolio’s are not required but are accepted.
FEES
The summer school has no tuition fee. Accommodation is provided for the duration of the school but a small contribution to the costs of accommodation will be required and confirmed at a later date. Travel expenses cannot be reimbursed.
