Comment about new HP Carlisle Pier winning entry….

Pragmatist mentions that “I am personally looking forward to bringing my family along to a state of the art marine life centre or open air concert (on the floating stage), as well as utilising the hotel, retail and public space components of the winning scheme”.

I have visions of the scuffles in Grafton Street, for the recent St. Patrick’s Day free concert, and a scene from the film ‘Apocalypse Now, starring Martin Sheen, where they flew in a couple of female pop stars, to give a performance, up river of Hanoi or someplace in Vietnam war…. with bodies dropping/pushed into the water and wholesale massive rioting… 🙂

I also think the recent ‘Light festival’ was a very dodgy affair indeed, I personally didn’t like the atmosphere there at all, and neither did many locals around Dublin city centre. I know some guys big into cinema too, and very often when they hold the open air cinema showings out in temple Bar, a couple of drunks invade right in the middle of the film and disrupt things totally for everyone else enjoying the film.

What makes any of you think, even for a second, that Dun Laoghaire might be any different? Cork, Limerick or Galway, would always have a better chance of hoisting something like this I think… and have done so on occasion without that same sort of ‘tension’ in air, which often proceeds the ‘riot’ style behaviour of crowds in Dublin city all through Paddy’s day and Paddy’s night.

My own thoughts on the ‘Light Festival’ is that Paddy’s day parade etc, and all of that ‘Green Irish’ clap….. looks great on the cameras on TV News etc, etc…. but when you are actually down on the ground in the city centre in Dublin either for Dublin city maranthon or Paddy’s day parade…. it is horrid.

Some more very relevant observations of Grafton Street, people and behaviour…

One of the most interesting and illuminating discussions about crowd behaviour and design of space, I have personally listened to in a long, long while now was at the very recent Kevin Fox memorial lecture which took place in Bolton Street college, delivered by one Des Macmahon, architect of Croker Stadium….

Big pity Des doesn’t sit down and compile a book, I am sure I would like to read it some time, as would many others…. 🙂

Out in Sandyford where all the real commerce and ‘happening stuff’ is in Dublin these days…. I don’t think too many riots are going to bother the chums running around in this picture! 🙂
