Culture Night 2014 attenders are invited to come to the Goethe-Institut’s “House Cooling” at their Georgian HQ at 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2, on Friday September 19th, in advance of its temporary closure for an €8 million redevelopment and expansion.

From 5pm to 11pm, the Goethe-Institut’s Merrion Square building will be open to the public, with film screenings, live music, exhibitions and a quiz among the many Culture Night events taking place in the historic building. The central event of the evening will be “Fair Ground Attractions”, where Dublin music collective 3epkano, who specialise in performing live music to classic movies, perform a live score to very early silent short films from Europe (1896-1916) at 7pm, 7.40pm and 8.20pm.
Exhibitions on display in the building for Culture Night include Berlin Photographer Oliver Mark’s extraordinary photos of Goethe-Institut library readers, photographed with their favourite books; and an exhibition of Henchion Reuter Architects’ plans for the extensive renovation and remodeling of the historic Georgian building, which has been the home of German culture in Ireland since 1961. There will also be German-Irish quizzes, German food, information on German language classes and more – all evening, all FREE.

Mechtild Manus, Director of the Goethe-Institut Irland, said “ We take Culture Night as an occasion for a kind of house-cooling party. We say goodbye after 53 years. And we look forward to the re-opening of the renovated building plus new language department in two years’ time…”
For the duration of the building project (September 2014 to Autumn 2016), the Goethe-Institut has relocated to its Education building at 62 Fitzwilliam Square, and some services will be reconfigured during the development
