MGParticipant
Between this and the thread looking for information on architects, it’s obviously “Get Archiseek to do our work for us” week 😉
MGParticipantWow, well done. 3W must be gutted?
MGParticipantSo what is the current status? Have the Irish Times retracted their statement or are they standing by it?
MGParticipantThink I’ll pop along to this.
MGParticipantNice, very nice. Not knowing the geography of Sligo, will the new pedestrian access link two busy streets? Or a major and a minor?
Great draughtmanship

MGParticipantI have no idea why one was never formed before. Perhaps because the Georgian Society and other small groups were saving individual houses.
MGParticipantWhat about that bastard unit used in the aircraft industry? Metric Inches? Fine nowadays in AutoCAD, but I once produced large sets of drawings in it on a board. I still have nightmares.
MGParticipantI cannot place the cottage at all but as far as I am aware, the block that backs onto Nassau Street was a carriage & stable block.
MGParticipantradical suggestion — perhaps instead of blaming politicans (don’t we have local elections coming up?) perhaps we should be trying to educate the people away from the concept of their house and 1 acre garden of golf course bunker flower beds?
Politicans by their very nature are always trying to be all things to all men — hence Ahern’s two comments last week: one for a national trust; and the other to build bungalows on every piece of land left.
BTW I’m not endorsing any views held by Mr Ahern who I believe is best summed up here:

Dunno that I agree about that ,the older I get the more time I seem to spend designing and the less on philosophizing. (not that anything I do is particularly brilliant), still although I was being somewhat facetious, I find the arcane language and poncey exclusionary tone of most of the writing referred to quite irritating. If for example writing about architecture is a developmental and experimental thing then surely the first rule should be Clarity, have a look at teh following drivel:“Architecture is communication from the body of the architect directly to the body of the person who encounters the work.” So writes Juhani Pallasmaa in The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses
I agree with you James. I thought that the last issue in particular was completely unreadable. It was if you pardon the phrase typical architectuese, completely unpenetrable even to architects.
The previous issue was a little better with the earliest issues being the least “poncey”. As a journal, if I didn’t get it free as a member, I wouldn’t buy it.
MGParticipantNo chimney? It may not have been built as a house.
MGParticipantThey have used the embossed concrete on parts of Benburb Street. I think they have cobbles along the front of Collins Barracks.
MGParticipantFirst, congratulations to the architects on winning.
It’s not the most exciting concept in the world but it could have been far worse. Remember as well that the design will probably change drastically between now and planning permission. At least they are trying to break away from the cuboid design of many of the entrants.
BTW, does it look like something from Anne Summers or is that just me? 😉
MGParticipantI’m with the locals on this. Neither should be built, the pool should be restored as a public amenity
Tonight’s vote goes ahead against the backdrop of strong opposition from many locals who believe the site should be restored to its former glory and opened as a public amenity accessible to all.
The baths complex dates back to 1843 when it was developed as the Royal Victorian Baths. It was later redeveloped as Kingstown Baths between 1905 and 1911. It closed in the 1980s when it became too expensive to maintain. Its condition has steadily deteriorated since then.
MGParticipantAn interesting read Paul. Political interference seems to be the norm here. When can we expect to see the new information online?
MGParticipantRetailers are angry at lack of landmarks
ANGRY retailers in Dublin’s Temple Bar have accused the management company of seriously damaging their businesses by not providing promised landmarks and tourist attractions.
Mairead Foley, a spokesperson for 20 businesses between Parliament Street and Fishamble Street, told a Dublin City Council meeting when traders were taking out leases, they were led to believe it would be Dublin’s Covent Garden. “In the last 18 months, six businesses have closed because there is nothing to attract people into that part of the area,” she said.
But Temple Bar Properties chief Dermott McLaughlin said: “I wouldn’t bat an eyelid that six of 320 businesses have closed down or moved on.”
MGParticipantHow much is 1 million punts circa 1953 in todays money?
MGParticipantAnother new version of the RIAI site. Looks well, much better than earlier ones (obviously their designer is learning how to design).
But I do enjoy the Disclaimer page — the link is at the bottom of the front page.
