A large and elaborate Church of Ireland, unusually so, as their churches tended to be more understated.
Now a lot smaller than completed after Earl of Meath demolished most of the entrance front in the 1950s when the building was discovered to be infested with dry-rot.
Construction on St. Mary’s Cathedral started in the 12th century, and was completed around 1194. The full title of this Cathedral is the “Cathedral and Parochial Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary”.
Work on the present cathedral began in 1858, and it was designed by the English architect William Slater.
Published in The Building News 1872. Architectural partnership formed between William Slater & Richard Herbert Carpenter in 1863 and continuing until Slater’s death in 1872.
Richard Herbert Carpenter was born in July 1841, the son of the architect Richard Cromwell Carpenter, and was educated at Charterhouse.
