Wooden windows in Ireland

There was a book published in the late 1990s on the history of Irish windows, called ‘The legacy of light’, written by Nessa Roche.
Also, the conservation guidelines published by the Department of the Environment includes a booklet dedicated to windows- I think they’re online at http://www.environ.ie.
As to what types of windows are popular in Ireland, well it wouldn’t be wooden ones. 🙂
Joking aside, PVC has reigned supreme in new builds until relatively recently.

Are you in Ireland? If so, just step outside your door. If not, just look at, say, the Irish Times Property website (http://www.nicemove.ie) or the website of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (http://www.buildingsofireland.ie), or any of the range of great pictures of buildings found elsewhere on this site. Also, see the thread re the Edwardian Farmhouse on this site, where Graham Hickey gives some of the info you need.

Figures released by the Irish Home Builders Association about this time last year stated that an extraordinary 80% of new homes in Ireland are fitted with PVC (and we’re heading towards roughly 76,000 completions this year), while 90% of what is now a huge replacement industry is comprised of PVC.

Things are beginning to improve though, as increasingly housing estates are being built with timber frames, but the vast majority are still PVC dominated.

Isn’t it frankly pathetic that we have to talk about timber windows today in terms of heritage and conservation – as if it’s a thing of the past. Even your post there ctesiphon is dominated by it 🙂
But yes, in terms of older windows Neassa Roche’s book is really excellent, though a bit more detail on glass development in Ireland would be welcome – she was probably constrained for space, or maybe there’s little material available.

In terms of older windows timmi, the Northern European sash completely dominates in Ireland, whereas in modern timber windows the Continental casement model is very common:

…along with (the nasty :)) top-hinged window (PVC version here):

These were especially popular in timber in the 1960s and 1970s in Ireland, but have simply been replaced with PVC versions.

That was basically a coffee-table guide to Irish Georgian fenestration. To the best of my recollection the history stopped abruptly with Bauhaus which was covered in a couple of sentences.

The conservation dept. at Durham (I think) County Council provide a very good booklet on traditional window styles in that part of the world, much of which is relevant to this country. Unfortunately I lent my copy out and never got it back so I can’t tell you the exact title but I think it cost less then ten quid including postage.

Maybe you’d provide more context here.
Are you an architecture/architectural technology student ?
Or is this research more in the way of market research ?

For styles (hmmmm) and profiles the best place to go would be to the principal suppliers.
Munster Joinery :rolleyes:, Rationel, Grady Joinery, etc etc.
I know that there is a share of imported Baltic/Scandinavian softwood windows also.

Some will make whatever fenestration design you want in whatever hardwoods they have, e.g. teak, iroko, sapele.

Eh, he asked the question in 2005. he’s probably on the pension by now….
