They have completed the areas on the raised podium between the Ussher and the Berekely now. You can walk around the back of the Ussher to the area between it and the college railings where visitors will be usshered in 😉
MGParticipantActually with the thread on Sam, do you think that Tom Power is trying to be the ‘Enfant Terrible’ of our time?
MGParticipantIn Tuesday’s Independent:
As you approach College Green from Pearse Street, just to the left of the original and only station on the Dublin Underground and one-time public jacks, that island that Joyce named the Meeting of the Waters in honour of the statue of Tom Moore
http://www.unison.ie/irish_independent/stories.php3?ca=45&si=942233&issue_id=8944
Now is there any truth in this? Or was it a Flann O’Brian gag about the underground station?
MGParticipantBy the by, I have often thought that his piece for the Venice Bienniale a few years back, was over-rated, an “hey look at me” cry for notice!
MGParticipantPoor Thomas, didn’t he change his name just to stand out from the crowd? He was Tom Power at college!
But every successful architect must be the master of the soundbite – you need that catchy phrase that will oft be repeated – “less is more” afterall.MGParticipantMaybe I’m missing something but I don’t see anything particularly exciting about it.

Does anybody know how to gain access to the Phoenix Park Tunnel and, if so, would anybody be interested in joining me on an adventure? How irresponsible is this? This is a functioning railway tunnel. At the very least you could get hurt or killed, and endanger the lives of others whether they be CIE employees or your companions. Grow up.
MGParticipantExcellent books, but I echo Paul’s sentiments on the CD-ROM presentation.
MGParticipantOne way, get the government to gave funds to Dublin City Council to buy the ad space from CIE and then leave it blank. I think it generates areound 300k per year.
MGParticipantThis is standard procedure for the AAI – the entrants know they have won or not, but the press are not allowed publish the results. It’s an unfortunate way to view publicity, and I’m sure the winners feel the same.

MGParticipantPerhaps they’ll renew the shopfacade now that the development to the rear is underway.
MGParticipantThe external platforms are in very poor condition. The fine Victorian architecture is poorly maintained in comparison to similar architecture in other railway stations in Ireland.
I found this on the site here:
MGParticipantLouis Hellman lands honorary doctorate
Oxford Brookes University has awarded the AJ’s Louis Hellman an honorary doctorate for his work as a cartoonist. Hellman has been satirising all things architectural for more than 35 years since his cartoons were first published in the AJ in 1965. In that time they have filled six books and have become collectors’ items.
MGParticipant“so-so site of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland” – I don’t think the RIAI will appreciate this. What odds a letter in the next issue from John Graby pointing out that the RIAI has a duty towards their members and that a new site is forthcoming?
MGParticipantSocial/affordable plan will go ahead – with flexibility
The Government is pressing ahead with its social and affordable housing scheme- and it is already working smoothly in housing developments where it is up and running. Although the Department of the Environment is currently reviewing the operation of the social and affordable housing progamme, many of the new developments going for sale already include some of these homes. Sources in the department have scotched newspaper reports that the scheme is to be dropped altogether.
MGParticipantDon’t knock ’em. The chimneys are an identiable landmark and visible from so many places.
MGParticipantThat edge needs to be tidied up I believe. Work seems to have slowed down on the carpark building.
MGParticipantYou need to look at the deeds. A brochure isn’t legally binding I reckon. Of course, I’m probably talking rubbish and you should really see a solicitor rather than us armchair legal types.
MGParticipantNot sure what was on the site of the former Bord Na Mona HQ. Wasn’t it featured on a postage stamp back in the 1980s? Theme was modern architecture, think the other stamp was the Church at Cong Co. Mayo.
